Exchange semester 2021 - 2022 RMUS/COLS
In the Research Master Urban Studies a semester abroad is a compulsory part of the programme. Students have the opportunity to earn credits by selecting courses to valid their electives and do fieldwork at one of our partner institutions worldwide that offer high quality programmes in urban studies.
In the Master Comparative Labour and Organisation Studies a semester abroad is an optional part of the programme.
Studying abroad is an outstanding opportunity to extend your horizon, experience an unforgettable adventure, sample a new language, culture and country. Students are advised to discuss their exchange destination with their academic exchange advisor, Dr. Marco Bontje, in an early stage.
You are required to list a second and a third choice on your application as places at the partner institutions are very limited and extremely competitive, and thus it is likely that you might not be placed in your first partner choice.
In order to be selected a strong motivation together with a realistic research proposal is important.
You'll need to list a preliminary choice of courses with your application and you need to upload motivation letters (in pdf) for the universities of your choice.
Please note: due to the current global pandemic of COVID-19, all exchange programmes have been cancelled for the entire academic year 2020-2021. At this moment in time, we are proceeding as normal with the exchange programmes for the academic year 2021-2022. However, there is a very real possibility that the exchange programmes, including the RMUS exchange programme, will be cancelled again for the academic year 2021-2022. If that is the case, we will contact you to discuss alternative option.
Students in the Research Master Urban Studies spend the first semester of their second year at one of our partner universities. In order to arrange your exchange in a proper way an early orientation on possibilities and destinations is necessary. Therefore, early in your first year an information meeting is organized.
The compulsory study abroad semester serves two purposes: students are expected to take their electives worth a minimum of 18 EC at the partner institution and conduct their compulsory fieldwork (first case study, worth 12 EC) in the city or region. Guidance from the partner university during the fieldwork is in most cases provided, but not guaranteed. Students choose their destination based on their research interests, the courses offered, and their language capacity.
Below you find an overview of the exchange destinations 2021-2022. The universities listed are the universities we have agreements within the field of Urban Studies. It isn't possible to go on exchange to a university not listed.
In the document below you can find factsheets of most of the partner universities of the Research Master Urban Studies.

Students are advised to discuss their exchange destination with their academic exchange advisor, Dr. Johan de Deken, first. The partner institutions agree each year on the number of students to be hosted by the partner institutions in the following year. This means that not all destinations are available each academic year, as a balance needs to be achieved.
