Horizon fund

If you would like to go abroad during your Bachelor's or Master's programme to study, to do research, to do an internship, to take a summer- or winter course, or to participate in a conference, and if you have not yet received a grant or subsidy from the European Union, you can apply for a grant via the Horizon fund. The amount of money contained awarded by the grant depends on the destination.

Application deadlines

IMPORTANT! The rapidly changing circumstances that are caused by the covid-19 pandemic, have a negative impact on the study abroad experience facilitated by the UvA. Unfortunately, the UvA has cancelled all study abroad activities of the 1st semester - 2020-2021. Please read the statement of 15 May on the corona webpage.

  • Due to the situation, the application round of 15 June is cancelled, unless you have been abroad during the first semester of 2019-2020 without submitting your application until now. Please e-mail international-fgw@uva.nl if this is the case.
  • If you are planning to go abroad during the second semester of 2020-2021, you should submit your application before 15 January 2021. The application form will open two weeks in advance. 

Admission requirements

To be eligible for a grant via the Horizon fund, you must meet the following criteria: 

  • You are enrolled at the UvA's Faculty of Humanities as a full-time student;
  • At the time of departure, you have obtained 60 ECTS;
  • For you stay abroad, you will receive no grants or subsidies from the European Union (such as the Erasmus grant). 

Application procedure

To apply for a Horizon grant, please fill in the online application form below. In this form, please explain the nature of your stay abroad, its academic component, and the added value the stay will have for your academic career. The following documents should be attached as PDF files: 

  • Official transcript of your list of marks, sorted by date (via the Education Desk)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Budget (please use this Nuffic form, which, unfortunately, is only available in Dutch)
  • Passport photo

Please take note: once you have filled out the form, you must print it out immediately! Unfortunately, it is not possible to save your progress and continue at a later point in time. So, be sure that you are able to fill out the entire form in one go and that you have access to a printer (or can save the completed document as a PDF). 

Admission to and payment of the grant

The admission procedure is taken care of by a commission that will judge your application when it comes to motivation, added value to your academic career, study progress and extra-curricular activities. 

If you have been admitted, you will receive your grant after you have returned from your stay abroad. Conditions for payment are that you:

  • must submit proof of your stay abroad, such as a statement given by your host institution (this is provided by the International Office) or a list of marks;
  • must submit a report (which may be used, anonymously, for information purposes).
